Perennial Plant Information

Yarrow should be planted in full sun.  It's drought-tolerant and grows well in poor soil.  Deadheading will keep flowers in bloom, prevent some flopping, and keep plants from self-sowing.  Yarrow can become invasive.  It also helps to divide the plant every 2-3 years to keep plant blooming. Height and width: 24 inches.  Excellent cut or dried flowers.

Flowerburst Red Shades: red, rose, and violet shades

Rosie Posie: Densely compact rounded clump of aromatic, bright green foliage is topped with loads of hot pink flowers with magenta-purple calyxes for many months beginning in midsummer.  Height: 18-22", Width: 24-30"  Full Sun

Tango: Fiery orange flowers along upright 14" stems.  This hummingbird and butterfly magnet is fragrant with grayish-green foliage.  Flowers mid-summer to early fall.  Height: 12-18", Width 10-15".

Agastache is not as hardy as some perennials but it helps to cut in back in spring and not in the fall.

Millenium  Showy 2 inch sphere with purple flowers appear in mid to late summer.  This ornamental onion grows to be 15-20" tall.  Plant in full sun to part shade.  Large plantings in well drained soil look beautiful.  Cut foliage back in the fall once allium flowers fade. This variety the seed is considered sterile.

 Spring - early summer blooms.  Grow in moist but well drained soil in part to full sun.  

Kirigami.  Deep blue and white flowers  Lovely when allowed to naturalize in part shady woodland border.  Have upward-facing flowers.  Height: 22-24", Width: 16-20"

A golden leafed part shade loving plant.  The color will be brighter yellow to lime green depending on how much sun/shade it has.  It will grow to 30-36 inches and blooms with tiny white flowers which gives way to purple-black berries in the fall.  Needs consistent moisture if planted in more sun than shade.  Is not drought tolerant.

This plant is a favorite of the Monarch Butterfly.  It can take up to 3 years to become established, but when it does, flowers will be on display from late spring through summer.  Grows 1-2 feet tall, needs full sun, and likes well-drained soil.  Breaks dormancy late.  Remove seed pods if you don't want seed to reestablish throughout your garden.  

Tuberosa: tangerine orange

A way to add color to areas in the landscape that have part sun to shade locations. Astilbe are low-maintenance plants with feathery flower plumes in a variety of colors.  The fern like foliage provides interest before and after plant is in bloom.

'Plum Rosie' is a bicolor Baptisia that bursts with blooms in the late spring to early summer.  Newest flowers open mauve pink and lighten to near white with age.  Plant in full sun.  Height and Width: 3-31/3 feet

'Sea Heart' have thick silvery-green foliage.  This plant enjoys full to part shade locations.  In the spring enjoy two-toned pink and blue flowers.  Height: 6-12" and Width: 12-24"

'Prince Charming' blooms from mid summer to early fall.  The bright cerise pink flowers will be an added brightness to one of your full sun beds.  Height: 3.5-4' and Width: 4'

Need to deter deer and looking for a small and compact plant for the front part of the bed?  This compact herb is an easy choice that brings blue-purple flowers all summer long.  Height: 10-12" and Width: 12"

'Zegreb' is a low-maintenance, sun loving, long blooming threadleaf coreopsis.   Golden yellow flowers on green, slender foliage blooms throughout the summer.  It will grow 12-18 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide.  Deer and rabbits tend to leave this plant alone.    

Fast and low growing evergreen perennial.  Violet-blue, bell shaped flowers from late spring to mid summer, especially with deadheading spent blooms.  Plant in full sun or part shade.  Deer and rabbit resistant.  Height: 4-6" and Width: 12-24"

A sun loving, compact, mounding shrub with dense fragrant silver-grey foliage and deep purplish blue flowers.  You will value it for the late summer to fall flowers when little else is in bloom.  The pollinators love this plant.  Prune in spring down to where new growth is sprouting.  Deer and rabbit resistant.  2-3 feet tall and wide.

      Arctic Fire: Perennial forming a low spreading mat of narrow dark green leaves with white and pink flowers.  Blooms in the late spring.  Cutting back after blooming encourages repeat flowering.  Needs full sun.

     Scent First Coral Reef:  Sun loving, compact, clump-forming evergreen with grey-green leaves.  Blooms in late spring into summer with fragrant flowers that are a gorgeous double, coral colored with fringed white edges.   Height: 9-12" and Width: 12-18"

    Kahori: Use in the front of sunny border for vivid pink color throughout the late spring and summer.  Height: 8" and Width: 12"

     Sweet William: Shorter lived perennial ( may reseed with right growing conditions)  Begins flowering in the late spring.  Remove spent flowers to prolong the bloom period.  12-24 inches long for height, with many colors to choose from.  

One of my favorite landscape flowers, coneflowers come in a variety of colors.  Plant in full sun to part shade, if it still gets 6-8 hours of full sun.  Heights range from 2-5 feet and flowers from June-August. Coneflower is drought tolerant when established.  Water regularly and let soil dry out between waterings. 

Cheyenne Spirit - Mix of colors: red, orange, magenta, golden yellow, and white.  22-30 inches

Feeling White - White flowers with golden yellow cone.  18-20 inches tall

Pow Wow Wild Berry - Bright magenta pink flowers.  18-24 inches tall

Mellow Yellow - Opening as a deep mango, the shades progress and mellow through shades of yellow. 28 inches tall

Green Twister - Outer edge of petals are yellow-green and bleed into a pale, lilac-pink.  Surrounding cone is bronze.  

Gaillardia loves hot and dry weather.  Give them plenty of sun and don't fertilize these easy-to-grow perennials.  They are long bloomers and tend to survive 2-3 years (dividing after year 2 might help extend their life).  10-16 inches tall.  Space plants 12-18 inches apart.

     Elijah Blue Fescue 'Blue Select':  soft powdery blue, spiky foliage forms a round clump and keeps its color all year.  Small, wheat-like seed heads.  Sun to part-sun. 8-10 inches

     Hakonechloa 'All Gold':  Brilliant solid gold foliage.  Needs shade.  Spreads slowly and not invasive.  9-14 inches

     New Hybrids Miscanthus: Long silky tresses of silvery cream to pink plumes in summer.  In autumn they turn to gold.  Excellent for screens.  In late winter/early spring, shear plants low to ground.  3-8 feet tall (most common is 6ft) and 3 feet wide.

     Panicum Emerald Chief (switch grass): Steely colored blue-grey to blue-purple leaves.  Purple pink froth.  Add an airy elegance to landscape.  4 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide

     Karl Foester Grass (feather reed grass):  Compact erect growth habit.  Wheat-like seed heads appear in late spring and last all season long.  Does not reseed.  5 feet tall.  2-3 feet wide.

     Pardon Me: Cranberry red flowers with narrow yellow watermark, bright green throat, and ruffled petals.  Blooms from mid-July to mid-October.  Height: 18 inches

     Passion for Red:  Vibrant red flowers with contrasting yellow eye/throat.  Early July bloom, repeats bloom, and a height of 27 inches.

     Stella de Oro: Bright gold.  Flowers profusely in early summer, followed by waves of bloom into early fall.  Height 15 inches

Coral bells are on average, 12-16 inches tall and the spread is 12-18 inches.  Plant in part sun to full shade.  Can plant in full sun if you keep them watered and live where temperatures stay cooler in summer.  

Firefly :  Nodding red bell-shaped flowers on mounds of green scalloped nearly evergreen foliage

Palace Purple: Deep olive green to purplish-bronze.  Cream flowers.  8-12 inches (20inches with flowers) Blooms early summer.  

Marvelous Marble Silver: Changes color throughout the seasons.  Leaves emerge purple in spring maturing to deep green with heavy reddish-purple veining and a light silver overlay later in the season.  Small white bell flowers appear in late spring.

Copper King: New leaves are bright orange with copper red centers and yellow edging.  Leaves have a maple-like appearance.  Red stems hold scapes of white flowers in the late spring.  Part shade to shade. Height: 10-12 inches (28-32 inches with flowers) Width: 29-32 inches

Catching Fire:  Vibrant lime green leaf with defined flame-shaped cherry red markings that flare from center.  Part sun to full shade.  Height: 8-10" and Width: 16-20"

Rose Mallow - 'Dark Mystery'  Dark, wine purple foliage contrasts with beautiful large 8" white flowers.  Each flower has a cherry red eye and dark pink veining. Plant in full sun and moist soil.  It is late to break dormancy.  Blooms mid summer thru early fall. Height and width: 5 - 5 1/2 feet

Hosta plants love part sun to full shade.  With all the different sizes and colors, hostas make an excellent shade garden.  

Blue Angel:  Large, blue-green leaves of very heavy substance form a huge mound.  Light lavender flowers in mid summer.  Height: 36" (48" when flowering), Width: 48"

Dancing Queen: Unique yellow hosta.  Pale lavender flowers.  Height: 18" (30" when flowering), Width: 28"

Patriot: Dark green leaves with wide, crisp white, jetting margins.  Lavender flowers.  Height: 22" (30" when flowering), Width: 30"

Golden Tiara: A chartreuse to gold margin surrounds a medium green center.  Lavender flowers.  Height: 12-16", Width: 28-36"

Munstead: English lavender.  Fragrant, cool lavender-blue spikes and gray-green mounded foliage.  Needs full sun.   Grows 12-18 inches tall and wide.

Hidcote Blue-Strain:  English lavender.  Fragrant deep violet-purple flowers on silver-grey foliage.  Needs full sun.  Grows 12-18 inches tall and wide.

Give daisies lots of sun and consistent water.  Removing faded flowers regularly will greatly increase the blooming time.  Divide every 2-3 years.

Madonna:  New hybrid dwarf daisy with the ability to continue producing lovely bright white, yellow centered, 3 inch flowers throughout summer and into fall 8-10 inches tall and 8-12 inches wide.

Kobold: Bright rosy lavender flower wands open from top to bottom.  Height: 18-30" and 12-16" width.  Blooms - early to mid summer.  Full Sun.

Full Sun.  Bloom in summer.  Deer love to eat the buds, so plant where deer can't get to them. 

AOA Avalon Sunset: Red and yellow.  Asiatic and Oriental cross

LA Royal Sunset: Orange and pink.  Asiatic and easter lily cross

Touchstone: Raspberry rosy red with yellow center. Oriental

Stargazer: Shades of pink and white with deep pink speckles.  Oriental

Asiatic: Blooms in early summer, usually 2-3 feet tall, flowers are smaller but more numerous, fragrance-free, vibrant colors

Oriental: Blooms mid summer, usually 2-6 feet tall, larger blooms, heavily scented, deeper color hues.

Panorama Mix:  Semidouble blooms in shades of lavender salmon, magenta and pale to bright pinks.  Blooms in mid summer in sun or part shade.  Height: 36-44" and Width: 12-18"

Walkers Low:  Grey-green aromatic foliage on long arching stems.  Lavender-blue flowers are produced in early summer.  If you are looking for an easy to grow, no fuss, looks good all summer, deer resistant, then this is a great plant.   Height: 24-36" and Width: 18-30"  Needs Full Sun.

Peonies like full sun and the height and width is 2-3 feet.  Cut back plants in the early fall or after the first frost.

Prairie Glow: Bushy, short-lived perennial - but may naturalize.  In mid-late summer enjoy the masses of vibrant red-orange flowers with yellow tips.  Loves full sun.  3-4 feet tall and 24 inches wide.  

Blooms early summer and will possibly re-bloom in early fall if cut back after flowering.  Height: 14-18" and Width: 18-24"  Plant in full sun with low/average water

New Dimension Rose: Rose pink flowers held on pinkish purple stems.  

New Dimension Blue: Richly colored, blue-violet flowers on deep purple stems.

Pincushion Pink: Long flowering, soft-pink flowers throughout the summer.  Needs a sunny location in the front of a flower bed since it is only 8" tall and wide.

Autumn Joy:  This hardy, upright sedum has light green leaves and deep rose flowers which age to a beautiful bronze.  Plant in full sun.  Low water needs.  Height and width: 24".  Cut back in early spring.  A classic landscaping plant. 

Spirit:  Produces bright yellow, starlike blooms in the summer.  The glossy, bright green leaves adds great texture around rocks, borders, and containers.  Thrives in hot conditions.  Height: 4"  Width: 18-24" 

Hummelo:  Distinctively different than its cousin, Lamb's Ear.  Forms large clumps of green, textured leaves with showy spikes of rose purple flowers.  Blooms early to mid summer.  Plant in part to full sun.  Height and Width: 18-20"
